LA LUNA DEL KAFAR

This is a very peculiar house, apparently untouched by the passage of time. This is due to the extravagant natural environment which is the defining element of this dammuso: the silent, deep volcanic lake with its various hues of blue, green and ochre and the soaring crater walls surrounding it, but also to the structure of the dammuso itself, a very old rural house made of field stones, with big rooms and beautiful vaulted roofs, which the owners have preserved just as it was, thus maintaining its truly unique atmosphere. The furnishings throughout are very simple, the house is, however, endowed with all the trappings necessary for a comfortable, relaxed holiday. From the parking area a short path leads to the narrow porch-like terrace running along the front of the house, it has a simple cane roof, the classical stone benches, a few comfortable pieces of garden furniture and an ancientpila, the double stone basin in which the washing was once done. The house is surrounded by vine and caper fields, the view is of the lake. A stone arch gives access to the dammuso and opens into an ample room with two alcoves recessed into the wall: the one to the right contains a double bed, whereas the one to the left has been converted to a bathroom. The interior decoration here, as well as in the whole house, is spare, almost ascetic, a few ethnic touches here and there, some coloured cushions, a few very simple, but well-chosen and well-placed pieces of furniture made of natural materials like wood and cane. A door in the left hand wall opens into the dining-room with its big table and chairs; the adjacent kitchen is small but well-appointed and done wholly in smooth concrete, and another door leads outside into a tiny walledArabic garden planted with just one lemon tree. In all rooms the ancient layout has been preserved, they thus show Pantelleria’s typical vaulted roofs, inner archways, stone steps up and down, and irregularly shaped niches recessed into the massive walls. The walls are whitewashed, the floors done very simply in smooth concrete of various earthen colours. A few steps descend from the main room to an ample hallway, a splendid old room with a barrel-vaulted ceiling whose masonry of ancient black stones is visible. Here are two doors, one leading outside onto the front porch, the other to the patio on the rear of the house (here are, under two arches, a barbecue pit and a stone sink), and two steps descend to the sleeping quarters consisting in a small anteroom equipped with a single bed, and then on into the second bedroom, a double, with an en-suite bathroom. The garden around the house reflects the simplicity of the building and is planted with the utmost sobriety and respect for the natural environment: a few well-placed caper bushes, some vines and tall prickly pear plants constitute the foreground, beyond are the lake and the high ridges of the old volcano.
The surrounding areaThe house is a little recessed from the lakeshore; the lake itself is perfect for swimming but has also a copiously flowing hot water spring not far from the shore; the lukewarm mud around the waterline is said to have therapeutic qualities and is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.
